What Are Uterine Fibroids?
Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. This tissue may develop on nearby organs such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, orUterine fibroids are noncancerous growths of muscle tissue that develop in or around the uterus. They are also known as leiomyomas and can vary significantly in size, from very small growths that cannot be seen with the naked eye to large fibroids that enlarge the uterus.
Many women develop fibroids during their lifetime. In fact, research suggests that up to 70–80% of women may develop fibroids by age 50.
While fibroids are almost always benign, they can still cause uncomfortable symptoms depending on their size, location, and number.
What Causes Fibroids?
While endometriosis can affect women at many stages of liAlthough the exact cause of fibroids is not fully understood, several factors are believed to contribute to their development.
Potential contributing factors include:
• Hormonal influences such as estrogen and progesterone
• Henetic or family history
• Reproductive age and hormonal activity
• Certain growth factors within uterine tissue
Fibroids tend to develop during a woman’s reproductive years when hormone levels are higher. In many cases, fibroids shrink naturally after menopause as hormone levels decline.
How Fibroids Are Diagnosed
Diagnosing fibroids begins with a comprehensive evaluation of your symptoms and medical history. At Phase II Center for Women’s Health, we take time to understand how your symptoms are affecting your daily life.
Diagnosis may include:
• Discussion of symptoms and menstrual history
• Pelvic examination
• Ultrasound imaging to visualize the uterus
• MRI imaging when additional detail is needed
These diagnostic tools help determine the size, number, and location of fibroids, allowing your provider to recommend the most effective treatment options.
Fibroid Treatment Options
Treatment for uterine fibroids depends on several factors, including the severity of symptoms, the size and location of fibroids, and whether future pregnancy is desired.
At Phase II Center for Women’s Health, treatment plans are individualized to meet each patient’s unique needs.
Medication for Fibroid Symptoms
For some women, medications may help control symptoms such as heavy bleeding or pelvic discomfort. Hormonal therapies can help regulate menstrual cycles and reduce bleeding associated with fibroids.
While medications may improve symptoms, they typically do not eliminate fibroids entirely.
Minimally Invasive Fibroid Treatment
In certain cases, minimally invasive procedures may be recommended to reduce fibroid size or control symptoms while avoiding more extensive surgery.
Your provider will discuss whether these options may be appropriate for your condition.
Myomectomy (Fibroid Removal Surgery)
A myomectomy is a surgical procedure that removes fibroids while preserving the uterus. This option may be recommended for women who wish to maintain fertility or avoid hysterectomy.
During a myomectomy, fibroids are carefully removed while leaving the healthy uterine tissue intact.
This procedure can significantly improve symptoms such as heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, and pressure.
Hysterectomy for Fibroids
For some women with severe symptoms or very large fibroids, a hysterectomy may be the most effective treatment option.
A hysterectomy removes the uterus entirely, eliminating fibroids and preventing them from returning. Your provider will discuss whether this option may be appropriate based on your individual circumstances and health goals.
Benefits of Fibroid Treatment
When fibroids are causing symptoms, treatment can provide meaningful relief and improve quality of life.
Patients often experience benefits such as:
• Lighter and more manageable menstrual cycles
• Reduced pelvic pressure and discomfort
• Improved bladder and bowel function
• Increased energy levels
• Greater comfort in daily activities
By addressing fibroids and their symptoms, many women are able to return to a more active and comfortable lifestyle.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fibroids
Not always. Some fibroids cause few or no symptoms and may only require monitoring. Treatment is typically recommended when fibroids cause heavy bleeding, pain, or other quality-of-life concerns.
Yes. Heavy menstrual bleeding is one of the most common symptoms of fibroids, especially when fibroids grow within the uterine cavity.
The need for surgery depends more on symptoms than size alone. Some smaller fibroids can cause significant bleeding, while larger fibroids may not cause symptoms.
Fibroids can sometimes recur after myomectomy, but hysterectomy eliminates fibroids permanently because the uterus is removed.
Fibroids are almost always benign (noncancerous). Cancerous fibroids are extremely rare.
